First Impressions: Women Printmakers of Washington

Beginning with the establishment of the Northwest Printmakers Society in 1929, Washington became an active center for the creation of original prints. This exhibition is the first overview of women printmakers of Washington state, who were active in the early to mid-twentieth century. First Impressions features the works of such important figures as Dorothy Dolph Jensen, Ebba Rapp, Yvonne Twining Humber, and Vanessa Helder.

Having learned how to produce etchings at the age of 13, Dorothy Dolph Jensen became the first woman to produce etchings and intaglio prints in Seattle after importing an etching press from Paris in the 1920’s.  

A wide-ranging artist, Ebba Rapp
was accomplished in ceramic
sculpture, painting, printmaking
and enameling.

As an artist working for the
Federal Art Project in Boston,
Yvonne Twining Humber
established a national reputation
prior to relocating to Seattle in 1943.
